Two artists, separated by more than two centuries, meet in a shared fascination with the human condition.

In Lita Cabellut x Goya – The Follies, Lita Cabellut enters into a contemporary dialogue with Francisco de Goya and his enigmatic series Los Disparates (The Follies).

Goya’s world of dreams, irrationality, violence and human folly becomes a starting point for Cabellut to explore the anxieties and contradictions of our own time. Her monumental paintings and sculptural works do not illustrate Goya’s imagery. Instead, they respond to its psychological intensity, transforming his questions into a visual language that is distinctly her own.

Cabellut is drawn to the space where beauty and brutality, vulnerability and power, reason and madness collide. Her figures appear suspended between the real and the imagined, inviting the viewer to confront both the darkness and fragility of human existence.

Goya has occupied an important place in Cabellut’s artistic imagination since her youth. His ability to expose the irrational and unsettling sides of humanity resonates deeply with her own practice, in which portraiture becomes a means of looking beyond appearances and into the psychological world of her subjects.

Curated by Eloy Martínez de la Pera, The Follies brings together Cabellut’s contemporary vision and Goya’s enduring questions, creating a space in which past and present, reality and imagination, come into confrontation.

The project was first presented in Madrid and is now shown in the Netherlands under the title Lita Cabellut x Goya – The Follies, bringing this enduring dialogue between two artists into a new context.

For Cabellut, Goya is not simply a master from the past. His work remains strikingly contemporary because the questions he posed are still with us.

What drives us towards fear, violence and collective madness? Where does reason end and the irrational begin? And what does it mean to remain human in the midst of it all?

Lita Cabellut x Goya – The Follies is an encounter across time — a reflection on the darkness, vulnerability and resilience of the human condition.
